Nepal’s Infrastructure Sees Steady Progress Across Roads, Airports, Hydropower, Real Estate, and Urban Development
Kathmandu, 21 Nov 2025 — Nepal’s construction industry recorded key progress today across several major sectors, including national highways, hydropower expansion, airport upgrades, and private real estate development. Despite seasonal delays and regulatory challenges, momentum remained strong nationwide.
Roads & Highways: Fast-Track Corridors Advance
The Department of Roads reported steady work on the Nagdhunga–Tunnel Road, where internal fitting, lighting installation, and drainage finishing progressed this week. Officials noted that the project is now in its final-phase consolidation.
Meanwhile, on the Mugling–Pokhara Highway, contractors completed an additional stretch of slope-stabilization work to minimize landslide risks ahead of winter. Traffic management teams were deployed to maintain partial lane access during construction.
In Province 2, the Janakpur–Jatahi road widening project hit 60% completion, improving cross-border trade mobility.
Hydropower: New Construction Starts, Old Projects Accelerate
Multiple hydropower sites showed measurable progress:
- The Marsyangdi-Besi 50 MW project commenced its early-stage excavation and access-road construction.
- The Tamakoshi V team completed a critical diversion-tunnel drilling milestone.
- The Nyadi Hydropower Project updated that penstock installation reached 70%, keeping the commissioning target on track.
Regional engineers noted improved power-supply reliability at construction sites, thanks to NEA’s recent grid-reinforcement efforts.
Airports & Aviation Infrastructure
Civil Aviation Authority shared updates from key airport projects:
- Pokhara International Airport began apron-expansion groundwork to increase parking capacity for large aircraft.
- At Bharatpur Airport, runway overlay preparation moved to the quality-testing phase, with materials currently stockpiled.
- Biratnagar Airport’s new terminal, which hit 75% completion earlier this week, progressed with installation of HVAC ducts and interior partitioning.
These upgrades aim to support rising domestic tourism and regional travel.
Urban Development: Water, Waste, and Smart-City Projects
Kathmandu Valley continued to advance its urban-service upgrades:
- The Sundarijal Water Treatment expansion finalized major equipment procurement under an EPC package.
- Lalitpur Metropolitan City resumed work on the Dhobikhola Restoration Segment-II, focusing on embankment strengthening and pedestrian access.
- In Bhaktapur, local contractors began upgraded underground cable-duct installation for a smart-city pilot zone.
The Ministry of Urban Development stated that these programs are designed to upgrade crucial public services for dense urban populations.
Real Estate & Housing
Private-sector construction activity remained active:
- Large developers in Kathmandu Valley reported progress on residential towers in Imadol, Hattiban, and Sitapaila, with several projects moving into exterior finishing and interior wiring stages.
- In Pokhara, a mid-range housing colony began foundation works for its second-phase units, driven by strong buyer demand.
Contractors continue to face high material prices, but improved availability of rebar and cement has reduced delays.
Cement, Steel & Construction Materials
Manufacturers reported stable production this week:
- Major cement companies confirmed increased clinker output, ensuring adequate supply for winter construction.
- Steel industries recorded consistent rebar rolling, aided by reliable electricity supply and lower mechanical downtime.
Suppliers expect smooth distribution throughout December, which is typically a peak construction month.
Outlook
With road expansion, hydropower build-out, and airport upgrades all progressing simultaneously, Nepal’s construction sector continues its growth trajectory. While regulatory delays and winter weather remain concerns, stakeholder coordination and improved materials supply are helping maintain momentum across multiple sectors.
